Jhaltola, a 1000 acre Offbeat Destination near Chaukori in upper Kumaon

Jhaltola, an old estate and apple orchard, is a blissful, secluded & protected 1000 acres of Himalayan wilderness, right in the heart of a reserve forest.
It is located in Upper Kumaon, and is the perfect Offbeat Destination to include in your kumaon tour plan. It is 100 kms further North of Binsar, right between Chaukori and Patal Bhuvaneshwar, and about 110 kms short of Munsyari. The unique location gives it a stunning Himalayan vista stretching from Hathi paravat in Garhwal Himalaya to Nanda Ghunti, Trishul, Nanda Devi, Mrigthugni, Maiktoli, Chiringwe, Rajrambha, Panchachuli in Kumaon Himalaya, and Api & Nampha Himal in Nepal.
The distance from the nearest railhead, Kathgodam, is 190 kms/ 7 hours, and distance from Delhi NCR is a little under 500 kms/ 13 hours. It is remote and a little off the tourist map, which makes it one of the very few destinations in Kumaon which is absolutely untouched by mass tourism. Once you reach, you will enter a cocoon of silence. The sheer space – a 1000 acres of solitude with stunning Himalayan vistas, is a haven for wild life enthusiasts, birders, Himalaya lovers, and offbeat travellers.
Jhaltola is a world in itself; a truly offbeat destination; and a sanctuary for tired souls. Make it your next travel destination if you want to experience the best that Kumaon has to offer- absolutely untouched natural beauty!

The Stay @ Misty mountains - what to expect
The Experience - Things to do @ Misty

The Misty experience is slow and immersive. It is a treat in every season. An ideal stay would be between 3 and 5 days, although you can stay for weeks if you enjoy the slow mountain life. We have made some exciting packages for the spring and summer seasons, that is built around Slow Travel. The longer you stay the lesser you pay!
Spring Season – Feb/ March/ April – as the earth comes alive in the spring, you can expect perfect weather for river side or forest picnics; brilliant days and time outdoors for walks, hikes and birding; Himalayan views on a clear day, bon fire evenings, and cosy nights.
Summer Season – May/ June – During the summer holidays, Misty is a quite refuge in all the madness of traffic jams and long queues. We will happily design “no traffic jam” tour plan for you, so that the holiday is more about relaxation and less about a hustle to plan and reach. If you are planning a road trip with multiple destinations in Kumaon, we can help you plan that too.
We organize an easy to do complimentary guided walk everyday, usually after breakfast or around sunset. There is also a whole menu of treks, picnics, excursions and other activities that you can enjoy.

Testimonial
shrabanain19 November 2024 Hidden gem of Jhaltola Myself and my husband, Dr. Tapan Seal stayed here for two nights. Wonderful experience in the wilderness with all modern amenities, in the lap of Himalayas. Staffs are really helpful. Thanks to Raju, Chandan, Manoj (without him it's impossible to be there). Must mention Manager Mr Samson, who in all smile always. Foods were palatable all through and served with great warmth. Shiva22 April 2024 Home away from home 🏔️ Third year in a row! Getting more difficult each year to pick any other place in this part of Kumaon. The views, awesome! The staff, amazing! And the property, too good to be true. Love privacy and no noise? That's what you get in the middle of this 1000 acre dense forest. Sunita T17 June 2023 A hidden gem in the mountains My family's stay at The Misty Mountains was truly amazing. The property provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with the staff in the hilly region being exceptionally hospitable. We were delighted to have sighted a leopard within the premises, adding a touch of adventure to our stay. The simple home-cooked food at The Misty Mountains was absolutely delicious, offering a taste of authentic local cuisine. The highlight, however, was the breathtaking view of the Himalayas that greeted us each day. It was a sight that left us in awe. We were so impressed with our first stay that we returned to The Misty Mountains for a second time. The property is surrounded by a large forest area, which added to the sense of tranquility and natural beauty. The cottages were simply built yet neat and clean, providing a cozy retreat. The bed blankets ensured warmth and comfort during chilly nights. Overall, The Misty Mountains is a must-visit destination. It offers a unique experience with its wildlife sightings, delicious food, stunning views, and serene surroundings. Sweta S30 May 2023 our second home. do you know how life sometimes really gets to you? it becomes too much from all sides and you just want to stop adulting and get pampered and find your inner peace. That's when we head to The misty mountains. this was our third trip here. we never usually visit a place more than once because there's so much else to see. the journey used to seem long to us, but not anymore. now it's exciting. we used to take frequent breaks en route there but not anymore, we are in too much of a rush to get there. we used to be tired when we got there, but not anymore. it is like going home. and we are delighted when we reach and meet the staff who are familiar to us now, we used to be anxious about how the owners are going to be. but Madhur, Ambika, and their smart-as-a-whip daughter Suroohi, who we have seen since she was little, are as always fun, funny, delightful people we have long conversations with. only hugs will do. lots of hugs. We also look out to play with Rags, their sweetheart of a dog. She is so well-mannered and polite, she will win your heart in a jiffy. the food is known to us, as simple and delicious. when Ambika can make a simple desert-like fruit custard seem like a gourmet affair it makes me go yummmmmm... the homemade pickles are delicious. if u want to go on a picnic, pls do, it's lots of fun!! A picnic basket will be packed for you. probably with the best "Jungli pulao" and raita ever. if its cold weather you are going in, your room will be made warm and cozy for u before your arrival. you will feel relaxed as soon as u enter. you will wake up to the singing of birds. the barking of deer, the scent of the millions of flowers, and the jungle. you will forget to put on sunscreen because you are mesmerised and relaxed from the moment you wake up. pls put sunscreen. at night you can lay down and count the stars, see the constellations...marvel at your nothingness. you can go for long walks, hikes, or catch up on ur sleep like i did this time. just go. you will keep coming back, like us. Anshuman Hazarika27 November 2022 Misty Mountains This was one of our most memorable trips. Astounding view of the Himalayan ranges from our warm comfortable rooms. Great hospitality. The hosts and the staff make you feel as if you are still at home though away from home. Their food had a homemade feel. We did a treck to the village nearby and to a temple. The trip really refreshed us. Sayak Chakraborty25 October 2022 One of its kind!! This is one resort where we found that the resort, in reality in far more beautiful than what appears in the pictures. Be it the rooms, the grounds, view of the snows or the dining - everything is at a level higher in reality. - We were booked in the " Rosebank cottage" . Each unit consists of 2 rooms, 2 bathrooms and a small verandah. The rooms are very warmly lit with a large bed and a sofa. We spent the evening lazying around in the sofa. There is no TV and believe me when I say you wont need one. - The Food is very, very tasty. Be it the paneer masala or the chicken kolhapuri or the dal fry - the food that we had here was easily the best in our Kumaon trip. Plus the dining area is also a large glass house, done very tastefully. - There are 3-4 treks which were part of the package. We did a couple of them. The sunset walk is the easiest one, takes 20 mins uphill but offers great sunset views on a clear day.Raju accompanied us on 2 of these walks. Apart from these, what ever is spoken of the behaviour of Madhur and his family or the Kumaoni lunch or Raju - the head waiter or the views of the Trishul and Panchchuli range - everything is less! We will visit Misty Mountains again and this time we will stay for atleast 3 days. shikha28 June 2022 Amazing secluded property with beautiful views of Nanda devi and other peaks We stayed here for 5 nights in the round cottage. The views and the flowers at the property are amazing. Madhur, the owner and his family are super warm hosts and made us feel very comfortable. There dog is an amazing pahadi girl who is super cute. There are a couple of treks from the place and plenty to explore around. Since it is in the middle of a forest one sees nature and it's tiny creatures in abundance but always be mindful we are in there home and not the other way round so please respect that and do not kill any bugs u see. They are quite harmless. Raju and Sonu along with everyone took very good care of us from providing us guided walks especially to the trambhkeshvar temple and some meadows around to providing home made samosas and local kumaoni delicacies. The place has a recreation room and some books but do carry ur own so u can enjoy reading ur favourite author besides a beautiful rose bush and under clear skies while sipping ur favourite beverage. Madhur, thank you for such a wonderful stay at ur place, it felt like home. Will highly recommend this amazing place that is run with a lot of heart and soul. Mahesh V26 June 2022 Great experiences - worth every penny A truly untouched gem. We spent 4 nights in the family cottage. Felt so much like home with the hospitality of Mr and Mrs Madhur, their daughter Surohi and Rags their dog. As indicated by them, the last 3 km is best done in their jeep, as the resort is literally in the middle of nowhere. Pure Bliss. Multiple walks and treks into the forest, make it an excellent place for birding too. Most of these treks are complimentary and Raju was extremely helpful during the walks. Staff are extremely warm and caring. Meals were a definite highlight... Mrs Madhur has obviously coached them very well. Homemade Pickles and jams were the icing. Some places we visited nearby include, Patal Bhuvaneshwar (cave temple), Gangolihat Kali temple (a Shakthi stal) and Bans pathan (place for water birds). Patal Bhuvaneshwar is a must visit, whether you are spiritual or not! Would definitely look to visit again... Maybe during a different season. Need to catch-up on the walks we missed, the views that were missing, and to just chill. Hemant K4 June 2022 Adventures Unlimited, Homely Stay & lovely food. And enjoy the peaceful stay, enjoy the recommended treks & get pure O2. This is superb place to stay , madhurjee and ruhu r so special people, lovely view , lovely recommended treks by madhurjee, nice staffs and homely food, washrooms need to be upgraded . But overall this is the best place to stay and enjoy the peaceful nature. And madhurjee takes so much care of everyone and there needs.
Gopinath N26 October 2024 Amazing property with friendly staff. The food is very much home like. The Pahadi buffet is to die for.
